Board Corner with Mia Yee

Inversant Welcomes, Mia Yee, Inversant Alum to Board of Advisors

My family has always stressed to me how important a college education is. But my parents also taught me to save towards college so that I would have a vested interest in my own education. Money in my family was always tight, and my parents’ struggle with money was usually thinly veiled, so I knew I would also have to contribute financially towards my education. Looking back, I took my parents’ words to heart and was very frugal with my money from a young age.

When I first heard about Inversant, I was a Leader in Training at Camp Harbor View. I remember hearing that Inversant would help students save for college and would match their savings – I was sold. For the 3 years that I was part of Inversant, I went to every single meeting.

I was extremely excited about the matching part of the program, but looking back, I think that the educational aspect of Inversant was even more important. It helped my dad understand the college application process, as well as how the financial aspect had changed since he attended college – financial aid, grants, loans, FAFSA, etc. It also helped me understand the process completely which gave me more courage in the college application process, and subsequently, how to handle my college finances while I’ve been in college.

Having just paid my last Holy Cross tuition bill, I’m proud to say that I’ve been able to pay off all of my tuition and fees in full, by myself, from savings before college, and working during college. I’ll be finishing in May debt free. I am really grateful to have been a recipient of all that Inversant does, and I hope that I can give back by being a part of the Board of Advisors!
