Getting Connected

Inversant Alumni on his experience with networking through Coffee Connectors

My name is Alex Ervin and I am preparing to enter my third year at Northeastern University. Coffee Connectors has allowed me

to interact and connect with a number of professionals in a variety of professions. Before Coffee Connectors, I had been to networking events, but I just looked at it as a time to speak with people to collect a business card. Most of the time those cards would sit in a pocket and never get a second look.

The Coffee Connectors event in June showed me a different approach to networking. Coffee Connectors created an environment in which young adults, like myself, could not only practice carrying a conversation with area professionals, but also learn the steps that follow the initial conversation, like sending a follow-up email.

Some of the people that I connected with were not in a field of my interest, but I learned that although the initial person that you connect with may not work in the field you are interested in, they may be able to connect you to someone else. I’ve learned that networking is not only the connections that are made, but also the span of connections that are built through conversation.

Alex Ervin is an Inversant Program Intern and currently attending Northeastern University.
